The first CSIJRI Governing Council meeting was held online on March 22, 2021. Attendees included representatives from the Governing Council: Vice President Prof. Zhu Min of SCUT; Senior Vice President (Research) Prof. Lam Khin Yong of NTU Singapore; Deputy Director Mr. Xu Hui of the CSGKC Development & Construction Office; Deputy Director Ms. Yang Honglian of the Guangzhou Huangpu District Science & Tech Bureau; and Senior Vice President (Strategic Collaboration) Mr. Ang Boon Peng of GKC JV Co. The meeting was co-chaired by Prof. Lam Khin Yong and Prof. Zhu Min, and the CSIJRI management team was also in attendance.
Prof Zhu Min first welcomed and thanked the attendees for their presence at the Meeting, and highlighted that this was the first Governing Council meeting following the signing of the Deepened Cooperation Agreement. He then mentioned in the new phase, SSIJRI shall continue to focus on technological innovation, research translation and start-up incubation, and to support technological advancement and industrial development of the CSGKC. He believed that with strong support from the Governing Council members, SSIJRI would make significant contribution to the development of the region; and become an exemplary model of research collaboration between China and Singapore, and a benchmark for the New R&D Institutes.
Ms Yang Honglian spoke on behalf of the newly jointed Governing Council member - Guangzhou Huangpu Science & Technology Bureau, she said the bureau will fulfil its responsibility and support the development of SSIJRI.
The Governing Council deliberated and approved of the new organisational structure of SSIJRI and was debriefed on the progress of SSIJRI in 2020, development plan for 2021 and major tasks in the upcoming 5 years. The Governing Council also approved key items such as the 2021 financial budget.
In his closing speech, Prof Lam Khin Yong thanked the Governing Council members for their support in SSIJRI’s development and emphasised that SSIJRI must focus on and accomplish its goals and plans in its new phase with higher standards. He said challenges come with opportunities, and that SSIJRI shall leverage SCUT and NTU’s strengths in technological innovation and abundance of resources to consolidate the foundation for a more sustainable future.
