Journey into Technology: Building Dreams Series – CSIJRI Edition

On October 21st and 22nd, a special session of the Huangpu District National Security Education and Huangpu Youth Academy of Science's "Journey into Technology, Building Dreams of Innovation Series" was successfully launched at CSIJRI. The event was organized by the Huangpu Science Popularization Association and co-organized by the Huangpu Science and Technology Association, Huangpu National Security Office, Huangpu Organization Committee, Huangpu Education Bureau, Huangpu Science and Technology Bureau, the Huangpu Youth League Committee, the District Workers' Committee, and Huangpu Youth Science Academy Yunpu Branch and Huangpu Youth Academy of Science Longhu Branch.

This activity seamlessly integrated a visit to the Popular Science Exhibition Hall, science popularization courses, engaging experiments, and interaction with researchers and R&D personnel. Its objective was to enhance students' comprehension of science and technology and deepen their understanding of the application of cutting-edge technology in our daily lives.

The visit provided students with insight into the CSIJRI's operations, and during the face-to-face session, they gained a deeper understanding of practical applications and research commercialization.

Popular science courses and fun experiments

PART 1 The wonderful world under the microscope

Mr He Rongmeng from Simscop Instrument immersed the students in the fascinating world of optics. He demonstrated the high-end microscope technology from Singapore and the diverse applications of microscopes in scientific research and industry. Under his guidance, the students gained insights into microscopes and technological innovation.

PART 2 A journey into the world of Borneol Camphor

Dr. Fan Penghui, a member of Prof. Su Jianyu's team, guided students through an exploration of Borneol Camphor using animations and videos. He also explained the application of innovative technologies and equipment in raw material purification. Under the guidance of Dr. Fan and on-site teachers, students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in making essential oils with Borneol Camphor.

PART 3 The superpower of intelligent inspection robots

Mr. Zhong Zhicheng, a member of Prof Tian Lianfang's team, showcased the real-life applications of inspection robots. During the session, students had the opportunity to operate the inspection robots themselves.

PART 4 New artificial soil gives the city a green coat.

Mr. Shu Shijie, a member of Prof. Huang Weimin's team, introduced students to the new lightweight, high-strength, earth-like green wall system and highlighted the advantages of this innovative technology from Singapore. During the hands-on session, students had the opportunity to experience the sponge foaming process and use the material for tree planting.

PART 5 AI: the mysterious power behind games

Mr Li Weiming, a member of Prof Miao Chunyan's team, showcased to the students how AI can assess body indices through simple mini games. The demonstration highlighted its ability to identify symptoms of common diseases in advance, enabling early intervention and treatment.

PART 6 Starch transformation

Mr. Sun Zheng, a project manager at CSIJRI, guided the students through the starch transformation process. He provided insights into reactive extrusion modification technology, highlighting a starch commercialization case from Prof. Yu Long's project team at SCUT. During the hands-on session, students unleashed their creativity and crafted unique handmade items using these environmentally friendly materials.
In the future, CSIJRI plans to conduct more science popularization activities to enhance its social value, spark students' curiosity in scientific exploration, and cultivate their research skills.
