Dr. Fan earned his Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore in 2003. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Germany from 2003 to 2006 and worked as a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge from 2006 to 2008. In 2008, he joined NTU as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to tenured Associate Professor in 2014.

Dr. Fan's research focuses on nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage, particularly in electrochemical energy storage and water splitting. His work includes developing nanoarray electrodes and applying atomic layer deposition (ALD) to energy materials.
He has published 217 journal papers, with over 18,000 citations and an h-index of 72. Among these, 37 papers are recognized as "Highly Cited Papers." Dr. Fan was named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and was selected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2018. He serves on the editorial and advisory boards of ten major journals (four from Wiley, three from IOP, and three from Elsevier) and has delivered over 50 invited and plenary talks at international conferences.
