This is a technology that offers a new type of lightweight and high-strength artificial soil for both indoor and outdoor green wall applications. Currently, flowerpot/soil-support frame structures are mostly used in green walls, however, they experience problems such as soil loss, compaction, and dusting. For the existing artificial soil foams in the market, they are mainly floral foam (phenolic foam) and carbon wool (cellulose foam), which cannot fulfill strength requirement of green walls’ application.

In view of shortcomings of traditional flowerpot/soil-support frame structure and artificial soil foams, a novel lightweight and high-strength artificial soil foam, as well as key technologies for commercialization of a new green wall system based on the developed soil foam, including techniques for mass fabrication and cost control etc. have been developed.

The developed innovative lightweight, high-strength artificial soil form presents a versatile solution for flower and vegetable cultivation in farms and factories. Furthermore, this groundbreaking development serves as the foundation for an innovative green wall system, offering a range of applications in indoor and façade installations of buildings, as well as artificial floating islands and more.

Value Proposition

The developed artificial soil foam system not only meets all performance requirements of green walls including good breathability, moderate pH value and water holding capacity, long service life, and being able to inject essential nutrients, which all make it an excellent soilless medium for plants to grow naturally on dry roofs and in harsh conditions. It is also able to compete with current flowerpot/soil-supporting frame systems in cost. When compared with other market available light weight foams, this developed artificial soil foam is of higher strength, moderate water absorption ratio, small swelling upon water wetting and it is very cost effective.

The developed lightweight high-strength artificial soil foam has been proved working well with automatic water supply and drainage system in a demonstration green wall system, and it can adapt to different indoor/outdoor and local climatic environments by expanding functions of the control system with AI control of water supply, drainage and light. It minimizes the difficulty of roof and exterior wall greening operations and reduces later maintenance.
